In this installment of The A-Z of Damp from Atlantis Damp & Timber Proofing Specialists, C is for…… Condensation.
Condensation is a type of damp and is by far the most common cause of dampness in buildings. Furthermore, it probably accounting for the majority of damp problems reported. At Atlantis Damp Proofing & Timber Specialist we pride ourselves in ensuring a correct diagnosis for your damp issue.
Our surveyor recently visited a tenanted property in Winsford, Cheshire to thoroughly investigate the source of condensation. Then to explore the suitable method of treatment.
Condensation is directly associated with mould growth, and this was observed throughout the property, on wallpaper and around windows both on the lower and first floors of the northern side of the property. This was the signs that the tenants are likely to spot first, and it gives an indication of the potential scale of the problem. In many cases, the mould can also give rise to complaints about health, and cause the musty odour frequently associated with a damp house. It is for all these reasons that this house needed help from Atlantis Damp Proofing & Timber Specialists.
Condensation occurs when the warm air comes in contact with a cold surface, usually an external wall, turning into water droplets on a wall or surface. Lack of ventilation and modern occupancy styles can lead to a build-up of excessive humidity and moisture. For example, drying washing inside a property, using unvented tumble dryers, not allowing kitchen and bathroom moisture a pathway to escape from, can all lead to the tell-tale signs of Condensation Developing.
You can help alleviate condensation by:
- Improving ventilation
- Reducing water vapour
- removing sources of penetrating damp.
We offer a range of ventilation systems, which include traditional or economical sleeved wall vents which will alleviate condensation with little or no heat loss and mechanical vents that are whisper quiet, energy efficient and low maintenance to create a healthier living atmosphere.
In this case, we installed both traditional and passifyer ventilation systems to ensure a better flow of air in the property. This enabled moisture laden air to escape the property, rather than settling on the internal walls and window.
This cost effective solution was positively received by both landlord and tenant. With the work causing minimum disruption during installation of the new vents.
